Reverend Jerry Falwell is an idiot. I'm watching CNN's Talk Back Live (which I probably should have watch more often) as I heard that "under God" was removed from the Pledge Of Alligence, which excited me. Regardless of my religious views (frankly, I'm in the middle), to uphold the Constitution, God shouldn't be mentioned at all in the Pledge Of Alligence. And when Falwell and others say that it shouldn't be removed because it's unpatriotic to do so, what about the patriotism that comes in upholding the Constitution, which grants us all freedom of speech and freedom of religion? Frankly, I find the Constitution far more patroitic than the Pledge Of Alligence.
I have never, ever said the Pledge Of Alligence. Not because I've chosen not to; we haven't done it. It's simply not done in Minneapolis Public Schools. If we were to do it, I don't think I would. I would choose to sit it out, perferably outside of the room. When it came to choosing high schools, one of the lesser pros I had towards the public high school I'll be going to over the private high school my parents wanted me to go to is that they say the Pledge there. When I toured the private high school, I was quite uncomfortable when they all said it. The point people are bringing up is that people can just sit it out if they want; it's not that easy. When your peers and most teachers are up there saying it, and you're one of the few, if not the only, sitting it out, it's not a good feeling. I felt it when I toured the private school, and if it was excruciating once, imagine the kids who go through that every day.
And really, with grades faltering across the nation, shouldn't making kids feel comfortable at school be the number one goal?
